The Mouse House

Trusty ol’ Disney continues to drive away good talent. I mean, recently. We’re not even talking about Jeff Katzenberg, now the K in Dreamworks SKG (minus G). And then there is the failure of Disney’s exclusive agreement with McDonald’s, which I am not mourning.

A short list:

Pixar (but Disney can still cobble together Toy Story XXIV).

Harvey and Bob Weinstein (of Miramax fame, although Disney gets to keep the Miramax name which they are free to ruin).

and now, today:

Ted Koppel (I wonder why Letterman passed on the slot. I heard from someone I used to know at ESPN that Disney benefits are good).

By the way, whatever happened to Friday night ratings leader and curiosity TGIF (people actually wanting to watch TV on date night??)? Oh, right. Disney bought ABC-Capitol Cities, and then…

At least they came up with one good hit on that there ABC networky thing. Who Wants To Be Suffocated By Endless Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Thus Killing The Entire Franchise Forever?

I heard on the radio yesterday that Terri Schiavo is the most blogged-about story in America.

I haven’t blogged about it yet. But since this post, as far as Technorati is concerned, is already about Terri Shiavo, let’s jump right in…

Il est le capitaine de fromage

For the record, a house like that around here would go for a half-million dollars, at least.

And, it wouldn’t even have a basement.

Bonne chance, mon ami!

On 10/27/2003, I wrote on what was then my blog:

Again underscoring the problematic nature of naming stadiums after corporations (beyond bad nicknames like the Juice Box and the Cell), FleetBoston Financial Corp. was purchased today by Bank of America Corp. in a $47 billion deal. The new bank is going to be the second-largest bank in the country. And it will be called Bank of America. So much for Fleet Bank.

So much for the Fleet Center.

I am thinking a good new name could be “Center of America.” It would be fitting to place the Center of America in the Northeast, which certainly isn’t, but… don’t you think it just works?

An alternative would be “Stadium of America.” It would eliminate the stubborn problem of geography. Plus, the Stadium of America could somehow adopt a colonial motif to match Boston’s colonial past.

Stadium of America— home of the, err, Celtics.

Partly because of my limited readership (and apparently because Jacques didn’t send up my recommendation to the higher-ups, probably because he hates Bank of America), my suggestions were not accepted. Instead, the Former Fleet Center was renamed every day for a month— naming rights were sold on eBay, and $150,000 was raised for charity. (Some New Yorker tried to name the Boston institution after Derek Jeter, but that was deemed offensive.)

Now, the Actual, Official Name has been selected:

TD Banknorth Garden.
